Paying It Forward Foundation

paying-it-foward

We are a New Jersey-based, 100% non-profit foundation dedicated to lending a hand to families and individuals that are struggling and in need of assistance due to disasters, disabilities, or any other hardships or special needs.

When Hurricane Sandy hit the Jersey Shore in October 2012, Gina and Peter Cavallo of West Orange, NJ decided they had to find a way to help. Gina, a Certified Volunteer Advocate with the State of NJ Office of the Institutionalized Elderly, had spent her career in healthcare. She took a disaster course with the American Red Cross and was immediately assigned to assist displaced homeowners at emergency overnight shelters.

Gina was so struck by their plight that she decided she needed to do more. She and her husband Peter, newlyweds married for just a few weeks, began to fill truckloads of clothes and bedding for those in need on the upper barrier island. She began walking along Ortley Beach and Lavallette with many other volunteers assisting displaced homeowners. From this work came Paying It Forward Foundation, a gift from a homeowner whom they helped.

Paying It Forward does what it takes to help residents affected by Sandy or any other unfortunate situation get their lives back together. They have distributed medical equipment, such as power scooters, motorized wheelchairs, walkers, canes, stair climbers, ramps, and hospital beds to those in need. They donated several vehicles to those with special needs whose vehicles were destroyed by flood waters, provided housing for homeless veterans, and rebuilt several homes including helping restore and spare headed the American Legion Seaside Heights, NJ with many other organizations who stepped up to help which was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. The bulk of Paying It Forward’s efforts have been in helping residents restore their homes.

Paying It Forward has cleaned, gutted, and provided free mold treatment to hundreds of homeowners on the barrier island with the assistance of North Baptist Men, Calvary Church, Jersey Shore United, Team Rubicon, Seton Hall University, McGuire Air Force Base, Sandy Weekday Warriors, Good Shepherd Church Point Pleasant, HecHT TRAILERS, Samaritans Purse, and hundreds of other entities and volunteers who teamed up with Paying It Forward Foundation. While their focus has been in Lavallette, Ortley Beach, and Seaside, they have helped hundreds of homeowners as far south as Manahawkin, NJ and as far north as Moonachie and Little Ferry, NJ Staten Island and Newburgh, and Long Island. Their priority is the elderly, special needs, and our Veterans however, they are committed to helping anyone facing a crisis. Recently the foundation donated $5000.00 to Lavallette Firehouse to help restore the Senior Center which was also destroyed by Hurricane Sandy displacing many elderly as well as supported NJ Hometown Heroes and many other entities.

Paying It Forward is a grassroots effort to help rebuild communities and restore lives. Where relief have fallen short or been delayed by insurance companies, etc, volunteers from Paying It Forward have stepped in to help return residents to their homes, their jobs, and their lives. For their work, Paying It Forward have been selected for a Blue Claws Sandy Ovation, nominated for the Governor’s Jefferson Awards for Public Service and New Jersey Heroes, and named as one of 19 semi-finalists for the 2013 White House Champions of Change, acknowledged by numerous media stations including channel 7 Above and Beyond, CBS, NJ Fios, invited to participate in a Documentary in Washington DC in 2014 and the Steve Adubado show..
